Dawn had never been outside Sinnoh for her whole life, so when Cynthia had asked her would she like to spend some time with her at a villa in Unova Dawn jumped at the chance. It wasn’t just because she had always wanted to travel to a foreign land, but because it was a chance to spend some time alone with Cynthia. In the two months since they had both confessed they had barely spent any time together. Cynthia had her duties as a Champion and Dawn had to train her pokémon, so they couldn’t meet up in secret as they had planned.
But here in this small town on the edge of Unova they were free to do whatever they wished. Cynthia had some time off from the league and Dawn had trained her pokémon all she could over the past two months. There was absolutely nothing that could get between them and their fun...well almost anything.
“Cynthia, you really should learn to clean up your room.” Dawn said as she organised Cynthia’s research papers. They had been strewn all over the room in a disorganised manner. Her tables and chairs were covered with dust and the room was just generally a mess. Dawn made a mental note to give this room a more through clean later.
“I’ve been meaning to,” Cynthia said sheepishly, “But every time I do I find something that I hadn’t noticed in a picture of some ruins or a word in a scroll that has been mistranslated, and by the time I’ve finished studying I’m...just too tired to clean.” Cynthia laughed awkwardly.
Dawn smiled. “Well it’s a good thing I’m here then.” She filled the last paper and closed the drawer where they were kept. She then walked over to Cynthia and kissed her on the cheek. 2So what are we doing today?” she asked.
“Well I think it would be nice if...” Cynthia began, but then she was interrupted by a rather loud knock at the door. Both Cynthia and Dawn jumped in surprise; they hadn’t expected any guests today or at all for that matter. Cynthia walked over to the front door with Dawn following behind her. Cynthia put her hand on the door handle, she paused for a moment, and then the knocking started again. In one motion pulled down the handle and opened the door.
Standing in the doorway were six women, well five women and a girl who looked to be about Dawns age, and had the largest hair Dawn had ever seen. She was dark skinned and was wearing a pink outfit. The oldest looking woman at the head of the group was even darker skinned and had large green hair, green pants and a beige top. The two women behind her were dressed in very unusual outfits. The blond haired one had a strange yellow and black outfit, and wore earphones with long wires hanging from them, and she had a calm and collected expression. Her red haired companion wore what looked like a blue pilot’s suit with large blue gloves.
And bringing up the rear was a very tired looking woman in what looked like pink pyjamas. Her hair was very long and very messy, like she had only just got up (strangely enough, it looked like a blanket). And beside her was a woman in a purple dress with short hair and glasses. She wore a strange butterfly shaped scarf with a red clasp.
“Cynthia,” The Dark skinned women said, she walked in and hugged Cynthia. “You should have told us you were in Unova.”
“W-well...I wanted to h-have some time alone...” Cynthia stammered, “What brings you here Lenora?”
“We just heard you were in the neighbourhood and we figured we’d drop by.” Lenora said. “And if you wanted to be alone, why did you bring this cute little thing?” Lenora pointed at Dawn, and Dawn’s face turned bright red.
“Uh...t-that’s Dawn...” Cynthia said, her mind going at a million miles an hour trying to make up an excuse for Dawn’s presence here. “She’s my...my....assistant. She helps clean up after me and sorts my files and...things...” Cynthia let out a nervous laugh to hide her panic.
“Well that’s nice,” Lenora said, “I always said you could use someone to help you around here. Nice to meet you Dawn, I’m Lenora. I’m a Gym Leader in Unova.” She offered her hand to Dawn and Dawn shook it.
Then Dawn was introduced to the others. Apparently the young girl with the hair was called Iris, and despite her young age she was a Gym Leader too and she trained with DRAGONS. The young woman in yellow was a Gym leader too, as was her companion in blue, and their names were Elesa and Skyla respectively. The last two women were named Shauntal and Caitlin, and they were members of the Unove Elite Four. Dawn could have sworn she had heard the name “Shauntal” before, but she couldn’t place it.
“Well, now that the introductions are done,” Lenora said, “I think it’s time we had some dinner. You don’t mind if Iris and I use your kitchen Cynthia?”
“W-well...no...” Cynthia said. As soon as she said this Lenora and Iris quickly made their way to the kitchen and a few seconds later the sound of food preparation filled the air. Cynthia looked over to her other guests, who were looking at her expectantly.
“Uh...nice to see you all again...” She said, “Would you like too...sit in the piano room while we wait for dinner?”
“That would be lovely, thank you Cynthia.” Shauntal said. And then they made their way to the piano room, and both Cynthia and Dawn followed behind very reluctantly. The other women talked away about the new pokémon musical that had premiered. Cynthia and Dawn said nothing, they just sat in silence while the four other women talked, never making contact. They didn’t even dare to hold hands, in case someone would see them. And they stayed like this until dinner was ready.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dinner was a delicious selection of chopped vegetables, meat and potatoes. Cynthia and Dawn sat next to each other and ate in silence for most of the meal. Sometimes Lenora or Shauntal would ask Dawn a question about her hometown or about the pokémon she was training and Dawn would give a short, simple answer. Neither of them dared to make conversation with the others at the table, for fear that they may say something that would give them away.
Dessert came (which was delicious chocolate pudding) and again Cynthia and Dawn ate their food without a word to the others. But then something happened that would change that.
“Hey Cynthia, have you finished proof-reading my manuscript yet?” Shantaul asked. Cynthia looked up in surprise.
“Oh, not yet Shauntal,” She said, “But so far it’s very good. One of your best I’d say.”
“Wait...manuscript?” Dawn said, then she realised where she had heard the name Shauntal before. “Wait, you’re THE Shauntal, the author of “The Yellow scarf”?”
“The same one,” Cynthia said, “She’s written a lot more than that.” She looked over to Shauntal, “I let her read one of your unpublished novels, I hope you don’t mind.”
“Oh...n-no...” Shauntal said, suddenly looking very nervous. “It’s perfectly alright.”
“”The Yellow Scarf”?” Catlin said slyly, “What is it about Dawn? It sounds...fascinating.”
“Well there’s this lonely young librarian,” Dawn began, “She’s had a really boring life and works in a library all day, but then she meets this handsome man who whisks her away on this great adventure. But at the end it turns out that he’s really a prince from a faraway land and they can never live together. Then he gives her his prized yellow scarf as a keepsake. The librarian then returns home and is heartbroken. But then it turns out that the prince has run away from his duties and they both live happily ever after. It’s such a romantic book...”
“Yeah, it’s one of my favourites too,” Cynthia said, “I knew you’d love it.”
“Yeah, thanks for giving it to me Cynthia.” Dawn said, “You always know just what I want...” Cynthia blushed and tried to hide her delight at Dawns compliment.
“What did the prince look like?” Skyla asked, she now seemed very interested in the conversation.
“Well he was tall and thin with black hair and a red and black suit and wearing a yellow scarf of course.” Dawn said. She noticed that Shauntal’s face was bright red and she was sweating profusely. Beside her, Catlin had a very creepy looking grin on her face, and Elesa and Skyla were giggling. Dawn wondered what on earth was going on.
“W-well...I think that...Iris and Dawn should...uh... spend some time together...” Shauntal said, desperately trying to draw her attention away from her personal book.
“Alright!” Iris yelled, she leped up from her seat, ran over to Dawn, took her unwillingly by the hand and dragged her out of the room.
“We’ll go too,” Elesa said, “Skyla and I have some...personal matters to attend to.”
“Wait, what?” Skyla said, “What kind of personal matters do you....oh! Yeah personal matters, that are really...personal.” The then both got up from the table and left the room, leaving Cynthia with Lenora, Shauntal and Catlin.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Iris dragged Dawn through the halls and out the front door. Dawn tried to struggle against her, but Iris was a lot stronger than she looked. They ran through the town, or in Dawn’s case was dragged through it. She barely managed to avoid a large hay cart being pulled by Ponyta. Dawn wondered where on earth Iris was dragging her. She tried to speak up but every time she did Iris just yelled, “No time, wait till we’re there”
After about five solid minutes of running they made it to a very secluded corner of the beach. No one ever came here as far as Dawn could tell and even the pokémon were scarce here. Iris finally let go of her hand and Dawn fell on her hands and knees on the sand. She breathed in and out rapidly, she couldn’t believe that someone her age could run that fast. She looked up at Iris, who had a rather creepy smile on her face. Dawn stood up and faced Iris
“So,” Iris said, “How long have you and Cynthia been together?”
“T-together...what do you mean?” Dawn asked, knowing perfectly well what she meant.
“I mean are you two girlfriends, as in dating.” Iris said, “And don’t lie to me, I saw how you’ve been looking at each other. You’re in love alright!”
“N-no we...we’re not like that i-it just...um...well.....” Dawn tried to think up an excuse, any excuse. But her mind just came up blank. All she could muster was a small squeak of fright. Her and Cynthia’s secret was out, and worse she’d have to tell her mother. That was something that she was saving for...never.
“Don’t look so scared,” Iris said, “I’m not going to tell anyone about your little secret relationship. I just thought that you could use some relationship advice.”
“A-advice?” Dawn said, she wondered just what a girl the same age as her could teach about relationships.
“Yup, you look like the naive, sheltered type,” Iris said, “The kind of girl who only knows about romance from books and movies, no offence. I on the other hand have much more experience with this kind of thing. Tell me, have you gone on a date with her yet?”
“W-well no, not technically,” Dawn said, since they hadn’t had much time to themselves all they had done this past week was sit in the villa and read books together, watch movies and trained their pokémon. It was fun, but they still hadn’t gone on a real date.
“You haven’t even gone on a date with her yet?” Iris said incredulously, “Ah, you are such a child, I bet you didn’t even try to make the first move did you?”
“...the first move?”
“Of course,” Iris said, like it was the simplest thing in the world, “You want to go on a date with her don’t you?”
“W-well yes,” Dawn said. She had been waiting for Cynthia to ask her on a date all week, but Cynthia had never asked her. She had hoped that today was the day, but then the others had come over.
“Well then ask her out!” Iris said, she put her arm around Dawn’s shoulders, “You need to be more assertive, you can’t just expect people to do your work for you. If you want someone to do something, just ask. I’ve been in lots of relationships, so I know about this kind of stuff.”
“Who have you had these relationships with?” Dawn asked eagerly, “What were their names, what was it like?” She was very interested in learning all there was to know about dating.
“Uh...well...that’s not important right now!” Iris shouted, trying to hide her nervousness. “What’s important now is that tonight you ask her out. Now, how about a pokémon battle while we wait for evening to come?” Iris then took a pokéball out of her hair and pointed it at Dawn.
“Sure” Dawn said, she took out one of her pokéballs and readied herself for battle. She had now resolved to ask Cynthia out tonight, even if it was in front of everyone there.
Cynthia sat in silence, sipping her coffee. She looked over to Lenora, who was talking with Shauntal, it had something to do with the annual Unova trainers get together. Cynthia looked back down into her coffee, and she wondered when Dawn would be coming back. She sighed, today was supposed to be the day when she would take Dawn out for a night on the town, but now it was looking less and less likely as the evening dragged on.
“So how are you Cynthia?” Lenora asked her. Cynthia jumped in surprise and almost spilled her coffee over her lap.
“Um...f-fine, just fine,” Cynthia said trying (and failing) to keep a calm demeanour. “Dawn helps me out a lot around here so I have plenty of time for....research.”
“You’re acting very strangely Cynthia.” Lenora said with concern in her voice. “Is something wrong?”
“N-no....nothing....nothing’s wrong....” Cynthia lied. Lenora smiled slyly.
“Not even the fact that you’re in love with a girl who is much younger than you, named Dawn?” Lenora said calmly. Cynthia gasped and turned chalk white. She began babbling some broken words of denial, and then tried to laugh it off. But no matter what she did Lenora still had that smug smile on her face.
“...how did you know?” Cynthia asked quietly.
“Oh, I think we all know,” Shauntal said.
“It was obvious,” Caitlin said, calmly sipping tea, “I didn’t even have to read your mind.”
“It was the way you looked at each other.” Lenora said, “I know that look, I’ve seen it hundreds of times. The kinds of look two crazy kids in love give each other.” She smiled warmly at Cynthia, who blushed.
“So...you don’t think I’m...weird?” Cynthia said. Weird was the only word she could think of that wouldn’t make her feel like a pervert.
“No, no.” Aloe said. “I remember your little crush on Karen when you were younger. And you’re not the kind of person to take advantage of someone younger than you. It’s nothing to worry about.”
Cynthia sighed, she felt a great weight lift from her shoulders, she was afraid that she would have to keep her relationship with Dawn a secret forever. But now she could talk about her friends freely without worrying about letting something slip. And Lenora was always a good person to confide in, so she now had someone to talk to if her and Dawn ever got into a fight.
“So...uh...Lenora” Cynthia said sheepishly, “I want you to know that there’s nothing...sexual...going on. I agreed with Dawn to wait until she’s...until we are ready.”
“Good to know.” Lenora said, and she turned to Caitlin and Shauntal, “So are you two willing to keep this a secret.”
“That’s fine by me.” Caitlin said, sounding very disinterested.
“You can count on me.” Shauntal said. Lenora gave Shauntal a knowing look.
“Shauntal,” Lenora said warily, “Can you promise me you won’t write any.... “special fiction” involving Cynthia and Dawn? We were only just lucky the last time.”
“Don’t worry Lenora, I only do commissions now.” Shauntal said, then she looked over at Caitlin with an evil smile on her face. “By the way Caitlin, the story you asked for about the lonely princess who falls in love with her butler is almost done.” Shauntal giggled nastily.
“I have no clue what you are talking about.” Caitlin said, her expression not changing. She sipped her tea as she watched the rage slowly well up in Shauntal.
“It looks like things are going to get ugly here.” Lenora whispered to Cynthia, “You go upstairs and get Skyla and Elesa.”
Cynthia nodded and got out of there as fast as she could to avoid the ugly scene that was about to take place.
“Wow!” Iris shouted as she withdrew her Haxorus, “I can’t believe you were able to beat me!”
Dawn hugged her Glaceon, she knew that all that training over the past few month would have been worth it. She whispered some words of encouragement to it and put it back into its pokéball. She stood up and faced Iris, she was a strong trainer no doubt about that, but with Cynthia training her Dawn felt nothing could stop her.
She loved training with Cynthia. She was a firm but fair coach, and always knew just what to say to encourage her. When she was training without her it felt like something was missing. She would always try her hardest with Cynthia, almost like she was trying to impress her. With Cynthia it didn’t even feel like work, it felt like they were all having fun. Her pokémon and Cynthia’s pokémon were already good friends, so they were able to play with each other while they attended to...personal business.
“So how about we head back to the villa.” Iris said, “Race you there!” And Iris dashed off away from sight. Dawn ran after her at full tilt.
Cynthia knocked on the door for the third time in a row. She waited patiently for the answer, but none came, she was sure they were in the room, as she could hear their voices on the other side of the door. Cynthia was beginning to become impatient. She knocked on the door again, louder and more rapidly this time. Still there was no answer. She groaned in frustration and took out a special key she had to access all the rooms in her house. She unlocked the door and opened it.
“Okay you two, Lenora wants you...” Cynthia stopped when she saw just what Elesa and Skyla were doing.
They were both naked, and they were just barely covered by the bedsheets. Skyla was on top of Elesa, who still had her earphones on. Both of them were covered in sweat and some...other liquids. Around the bed were several toys that Cynthia assumed were for...special times between couples. One of them was still vibrating on the floor. Skyla and Elesa looked at Cynthia and their faces turned bright red and they gasped with shock.
“Uh...we can explain,” Elesa said, there was a very awkward moment of complete silence, “Uh, Skyla...can you tell her?”
Skyla babbled something about the room being too hot and them taking off their clothes to cool down and then it was too cold so they got under the bedcovers to warm up. And the reason she was laying on top of Elesa was because...they were playing a game, and that was what the toys were for. This was lengthened out by babbling and prompts from Elesa. Cynthia looked at them for a few seconds.
“I saw nothing.” She said calmly, “Lenora wants you downstairs.” She then turned around and left the room without another word.
When Iris and Dawn got back to the villa, Lenora, Shauntal and Caitlin were getting ready to go. Iris looked disappointed to leave Dawn so soon and she made her promise that they would battle again soon. After about five minutes Elesa and Skyla came down the stairs. They looked rather dishevelled and their clothes looked rather ruffled and thrown on, their hair was also not done up. They apologised for taking so long. Eventually everyone said their goodbyes and left, leaving Cynthia and Dawn alone.
For a long time neither of them said anything. They just stood in the doorway and watched their guests leave. When they had disappeared out of sight Cynthia closed the door and Cynthia and Dawn found themselves alone in the hallway. It was odd, all day they wanted to talk to each other alone but now they had that opportunity they were too nervous to have a conversation.
Dawn summoned up all her courage and said. “Cynthia...I want to ask you something.”
“Yes, what is it?” Cynthia asked, she wondered if something was wrong with Dawn.
“W-well...I-I saw this nice l-little restaurant in town a-and I was wondering i-if...um...I mean if you’re not busy...well...um...uh...” She was so nervous that the words just wouldn’t come out. Cynthia gave her a knowing smile, and then she leaned down and gave her a soft kiss on the lips.
“I’d love to.” She said.
But here in this small town on the edge of Unova they were free to do whatever they wished. Cynthia had some time off from the league and Dawn had trained her pokémon all she could over the past two months.
